Thanks for your feedback, and of course, I simplified some of this story so it was of reasonable length. But I don’t think of it as click-bait because the title is true. To be clear, I am not a micro-manager by nature. But every time I’ve changed jobs, companies, and managers, I’ve had to assess the management style of that context, learn new complex domains, and figure out my way forward. The revelation for me was not the notion of avoiding micromanagement; I wouldn’t have succeeded in my work if I hadn’t learned that lesson long ago. But in all my years in the working world, I’ve never had a manager so explicitly give me permission and indeed encourage me to allow failure to happen because it is the natural co-pilot of scaling my leadership. Having a whole team operating under this philosophy feels very empowering, even after all these years :)
